With spring around the corner I am excited to get outside to photograph families frolicking in the warm sunshine! But sometimes a winter session is a must – especially right around the holidays when families are together. The key is to be a little flexible and usually we can find a day when the weather is agreeable. Sometimes we get a few really nice ones in there! As was the case with the Love family. We had a beautiful evening for their photography session & with one of their children living in Nepal it was important to capture the family all together while she was here.

Every year I get a few requests to photograph families in the winter. I’m always a little weary as my experience with working with people in the cold often means running noses, cranky kids and bulky sweaters that are often unflattering. But I understand that around the holidays is often the only time extended families get together so I usually give in and say let’s go for it. I’m happy to say that this year my winter family sessions were great! Yes, it was cold and the kids were doing jumping jacks to stay warm, but everyone was game and no unruly sweaters too boot! The first family is below – on one of the coldest mornings of 2015!
I met the Berg Family at one of my favorite beaches on Bainbridge Island. It was a beautiful May evening, it always amazes me how late the sun stays out this time of year! Luckily these children were fine with staying up a little late for a photo shoot on the beach. Photographing three young children keeps you on your toes, but capturing all those little expressions and playfulness is priceless!
